Does anyone still write a blog?
Once upon a time, I wrote and published a blog chronicling my cultural experiences—whether through film, books, theatre, concerts, exhibitions, or the travel that often accompanied them.
Though I stopped updating that blog long ago, my appetite for culture has only grown. I’ve been keeping private records, but recently, the urge to share has reëmerged. (Yes, I’m a long-time subscriber to The New Yorker, and unapologetically fond of the diaeresis.)
I don’t know how long I’ll keep this up, but the idea of putting my rambling thoughts on a page appeals to me. So does the challenge of doing so in English, which is not my native language. And perhaps, the conversations that might follow will open new horizons.
I’m a 56-year-old Frenchman with a full-time job in the financial sector and an unquenchable thirst for culture—in the broadest sense of the word. Music, mostly classical, and theatre are my most intense pursuits.
Musical theatre, which sits at the confluence of both, has always spoken to me in the most profound way. Thirty-plus years ago, only a handful of us shared that passion in Paris. Thankfully, it was the era of “Bulletin Board Services” and Usenet, which helped open the world to me.
I began travelling extensively to fulfil that longing, hence the handle Paris–Broadway, which I’ve used for years. I’ve now seen thousands of musicals across the globe… as well as countless operas, classical concerts, and “straight” plays.
How often will I be posting? For now, I’m thinking once or twice a week—though that may very well change.
